INSERVICE

  • Induction Year Teacher Inservice
Georgetown ISD conducts one day of Induction Year Teacher Inservice. The Induction Year Teacher Inservice is only for teachers with zero years teaching experience.
  • New Employee Inservice
New Employee Inservice is for all new instructional employees and instructional support personnel, including instructional aides. Please contact the Human Resource Office at 943-5000 for more information.
  • Inservice
Georgetown ISD has scheduled 12 teacher inservice days during the school year for all instructional staff members. One of these days has been designated as the District Inservice and one has been designated for Special Education, Bilingual and other special programs inservice. The remaining days have been reserved for campus staff development initiatives, campus planning, teacher workdays, and one elementary parent conference day. These days are noted on the district calendar. Please check the GISD Inservice Schedule for specific information on dates, times, location, and required attendance.
  • Compensation Days
Three of the inservice days have been designated as compensation days for teachers/staff who attend 3 days of professional development in the summer. The district calendar designates the dates which can be used for compensation time. Contact your campus principal to determine if specific summer workshops have been designated for compensation time.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS

All members of the staff who work with students in any instructional environment must attend training activities. This includes administrators, teachers, professional support staff, and instructional aides.

  • All Instructional Staff
A new state law requires that every instructional staff member receives Special Education training annually. (District inservice meets this requirement.) Teachers certified in Crisis Prevention Intervention must recertify every two years. All teachers must have Texas Behavior Support Initiative (TBSI).
  • Gifted and Talented
The state requires teachers who instruct students in the GISD Gifted and Talented program to have 30 hours of initial GT training. This requirement includes a minimum of 6 hours training the “The Nature and Needs of the Gifted”, and “Identification and Student Assessment.”  The state requires that teachers of GT students and members of the GT Student Review Committee attend 6 hours of update training annually. All administrators and counselors must have an initial 6 hours which includes Nature and Needs and Identification/Assessment.
  • Bilingual/ESL
All Bilingual/ESL teachers and paraprofessionals must be trained in administration of IDEA IPT/OLPT Oral Reading and Writing. All Bilingual/ESL teachers must have an LPAC training certificate.
  • Special Education
Contract the Special Education director for specific training requirements.
  • Dyslexia Teachers
Contact the Curriculum Director for specific training requirements.
  • Extra-Curricular Activity Sponsors and Staff
Teachers who are responsible for Extra-Curricular Activities are required to complete CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) Training every year.
  • Science Teachers
All Science teachers are required to attend the Science Safety workshop. This workshop is required for all Science teachers who are new to the district. It is also required for teachers who begin teaching a new course. Check the GISD website for the link to staff development for registration information.

COMPENSATION TIME
Instructional staff can participate in professional development activities during the summer directly preceding the school year and then compensate this time for up to 3 designated Comp/Inservice days during the ensuing year. Staff members who do not acquire sufficient professional development time to substitute for compensation time must comply with one of the following:

  • attend campus inservice on the comp day
  • use a personal leave day
  • or make arrangements with the principal to fulfill the requirement.

The principal has final approval for the 3 types of activities which qualify as compensation time. Non-instructional staff may work with their campus principals to determine their responsibilities during the scheduled compensation days.

Professional Development Activities That May Be Used for Compensation Time
The campus principal’s approval is required to determine if an activity qualifies as Compensation Time. Although all activities listed in the GISD Summer Course Catalog may be used for compensation time, there are specific workshops that are designated as COMP day workshops. Campus principals may authorize other activities on an individual basis. Examples of other activities which may be approved by the principal, include: Region XIII staff development workshops, college course work, and Advanced Placement training. Teachers who present a workshop may receive Compensation Time in lieu of a consultant fee.

Professional Development Activities That May NOT Be Used for Compensation Time
Professional Development activities for which teachers receive a stipend or that occur during regular contract time do not qualify as Compensation Time. Conferences held on regular school days, do not count for compensation time, but are recorded as CPEUs (Continuing Professional Education Units).

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND INSERVICE RECORD

Each instructional staff member should have a Professional Development Record that is issued by the principal to you each May. On this Record you will record all of the professional development activities (CPEUs) you attend from the beginning of summer vacation through the end of the next school year.

Record both your attendance at inservice and at professional development activities which occur outside the regular school day. Designate on the Record which of your Professional Development activities is to be used for Compensation Time. Attach copies of attendance certificates to your Record. You may want to make a copy to keep for your personal records. Turn in your original Professional Development and Inservice Record to your principal my May 1st . Your principal will submit the Record to Central Administration, which maintains your staff development records while you are employed in the District.
