Georgetown ISD is implementing a new bell schedule for the 2016-2017 school year in order to be in compliance with a new state law. In January 2016, the GISD Board of Trustees approved the 2016-2017 district calendar
that included additional minutes of daily instruction at all grade levels.
This calendar was developed to comply with the requirements of House Bill 2610, which now defines instructional time by minutes, rather than days. All students must now receive 75,600 minutes of instruction per school year. In addition, the district was required to build in the equivalent of two inclement weather days that do not have to be made up should Georgetown ISD have to close school for bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
In order to meet these new requirements, the school day has been extended to 7.5 hours per day for every campus. When compared to 2015-2016, this change increased the amount of time for students in elementary school by 20 minutes, middle school by 5 minutes, and high school by 30 minutes. The district attempted to keep the start and stop times as close to the previous schedules as possible; however, the schedules had to provide adequate time to address transportation needs.
