Combining Discipline and Education to Help Students Achieve
Success
The Georgetown Alternative Program is the Discipline Alternative
Education Program for GISD students in grades 6-12. Students are placed in
the G.A.P. for violating the Student Code of Conduct. These
students may be affected by factors including drugs, alcohol, inability to
function in the traditional school environment, family issues, academic difficulties,
or emotional difficulties. The G.A.P. seeks to provide these students with
an environment that promotes positive decision-making, self-discipline, positive
social skills, and improved academic performance.
The Georgetown Alternative Program began in 1996, and it incorporates
both a military style discipline component and an educational component. The
military component addresses student discipline, character building, decision-making,
and self-control, while the educational component concentrates on improving
academic skills and performance. Students wear uniforms and receive:
- Leadership and social skills training
- Service learning instruction/projects
- Emphasis on teamwork (parents/guardians, staff, students)
- Discipline instruction
- Daily behavior documentation
- Counseling
- Drill and ceremony training
- Physical training
- Constant supervision
- High degree of structure
- Positive behavioral supports
- High expectations for success
- Academic instruction in core areas and some elective courses
- Low staff/student ration (2:12)
- Small group instruction
The G.A.P. also offers two other prevention intervention programs
to GISD students who have exhibited patterns of misbehavior, prior to a possible
placement in the G.A.P.:
Prevention Intervention Training (P.I.T.) - 5 day program from
4:00-5:00 PM involving intensive social skills training and physical training.
Students who complete this program can erase a demerit from their discipline
records (up to 2 demerits maximum.) The P.I.T. program is offered semi-weekly at
secondary campuses throughout the school year.
GAP Orientation Program – offered 1 to 2 times per month
throughout the school year. This program is designed as an early intervention/prevention
measure for students who have just begun to exhibit signs of misbehavior or
students who are unable to attend the PIT after school. GAP Orientation is
a 3 hour program at the GAP facility from 7:45 – 11:15 a.m. and consists
of an overview of the GAP and the code of conduct, followed by intensive social
skills training and physical training. Students can erase a demerit from their
discipline record by completing this program (at the sending administrator’s
discretion).
The GAP also offers ½ hour tours for students and
parents/guardians at the request of their administrator (tours are subject
to availability of the GAP staff). Tours are available for students in
grades 4-12. A GAP tour consists of viewing of the facility
and brief introduction to the program. See your campus administrator
for more information.
* See your secondary school’s campus administrator for
more information regarding the above mentioned programs.
